World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
Item upgrades can be used to increase the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade it can raise an item's Mark level or Rarity, as well as boost other stats.
Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a certain number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a specific amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's stats base increase when it is upgraded. This is the sum of all its upgraded perks (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be expensive depending on who you hire and what you do. This is due to the variety of perks that need to be changed in order to upgrade an item.
It can also be used as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, raids and scenarios. When deciding to purchase or sell gear, players can compare the levels of the item. It's a sign of the item's damage and quality. Comparing items from a vendor's stock is possible using the level of the item.
On your PC, you can check the level of the item using ALT, or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the item's full description, including the ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering an item with the mouse cursor and entering /itemlevel into chat.
There are various theories about how the item level calculation is made. One theory suggests that the item level is determined by an equation that determines how valuable the stats of an item really are. The affixes are used to give items extra damage or special capabilities (such as reviving dead or reducing cooling downs), or to distinguish them by naming them.
All affixes can be re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window, pressing the green button. This will cost a specific amount in gold and items. These can be used as upgrade gauges just like the other methods of rerolling.
Players can upgrade an item to specific stats or reroll affixes. The possible stat ranges for an item are determined by the item level, but every item is guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within that range, unless it is an exclusive item or a God roll from a boss in a raid.
Another thing that could change is the option to upgrade equipment without having to roll the affixes, or choose which stats to increase. Similar to the base equipment, it will have to be done per item and the item comparison interface wouldn't display all possible stats at once.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the odds of finding items, the properties spawned on loot drops, and the intensity of these properties. It doesn't, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players an opportunity to get better equipment earlier in the game. This is especially useful in the early game, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

The shields, armor, and weapons have a default Luck value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to give +40 Luck or to boost the Luck of an item up to 140.
Additionally, certain items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be found in the shop or crafted with the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Item upgrades are expensive and not all upgrades will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chance of success of an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their item if it is not successful.
The success rate of an upgrade is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special materials. There are limitations on the extent to which success rates can be increased, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%.
The success of an upgrade is also affected by the luck of that item. Every item has an average success rate of 25 percent, and every item with Luck increases this chance by 5%.
Note that upgrades to items are rendered above the items in the inventory which means that enchantment glints and other effects could be masked by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
